Agriculture is central to the history of our mountain communities and continues to be an important part of life in the High Country. However, small-scale agriculture continues to face challenges to profitability, and farmers cannot count on farming as a sustainable livelihood.
Small producers have:
- difficulty earning enough to sustain their operations and their families at a disadvantage in competing with larger-scale operations
- challenges marketing and distributing their goods
- costs of equipment and systems for storage, cooling, transportation, and marketing are a barrier
Restaurants and consumers sometimes struggle with access to local products, even though they would like to support local food.
HCC believes that worker and producer cooperatives could offer unique ways to address some of these challenges. Together, we can strengthen our local food system!
